Default Setting

The God who Judges.

This week’s reading and sermon explore the human default setting and the reality of God’s judgment and salvation, drawing from Genesis 6 & 7.

  • Human Default Setting: Humanity shares a common default condition across the globe. Humans struggle to trust God, leading to stress responses like fear and anxiety because deep down they feel unsafe. To find meaning and security, people create substitute systems (religious, social, economic, or political) to establish control. Furthermore, humans tend to hide, carrying a deep-seated sense that something is fundamentally wrong with them.
  • The Reality of God’s Judgment: When human attempts to manage insecurity and hidden brokenness go unchecked, evil festers, leading to divine intervention and judgment as seen in the days of Noah. While society often rejects the concept of a judging God, without a moral reference point or accountability to a higher standard, morality dissolves into a system where the strong overpower the weak.
  • Judgment as the Means of Salvation: God’s judgment is not detached or clinical; it is a profound grief and shock over human destruction that costs God dearly. However, His judgment also becomes the means of salvation. Just as Noah and his family were preserved above the waters in the ark by trusting God, believers are shielded through Christ. The ultimate collision of truth, grace, and judgment took place at the cross, where Jesus bore our judgment so that we could be forgiven and restored.
  • Experiencing Rest and the Love of God: True rest and peace cannot be found apart from experiencing the love of God, which is displayed at the cross. By uncovering our brokenness and laying aside our pretense before God, we allow Him to cover our nakedness through His grace, transforming our lives and anchoring us in His unfailing love.
